Shih-An Liu, MD, PhD is an attending physician in the Department of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery at Taichung Veterans General Hospital in middle Taiwan. He is conducting translational research in the field of head and neck malignancy and especially focusing on oral cavity cancer. Oral cavity cancer is one of the leading causes of death due to malignancy in Taiwan where betel quid chewing is prevalent. His articles regarding genetic analysis of oral cavity cancer were published in many international journals. In his early career, he was also interested in the epidemiology of oral cavity cancer. Taiwan health authority has implemented oral mucosa screening program domestically since 2004. Therefore, relevant data can be collected during the oral mucosa screening process. Evidences strongly indicate that people who have habits of smoking, betel quid chewing and alcoholic consumption on a regular basis will be most likely to contract oral cavity cancer. While his current research focuses on the translational study, he spares no efforts to find potential biomarkers for oral cavity cancer in the hope of earlier diagnosis and better prognosis for oral cavity cancer patients.
